Don't do it in one sitting
You can ride Hanoi to Saigon without leaving the train, but the smart move is to break the journey. Hue for history, Da Nang for the beach, Nha Trang for the sea — each is a natural pause, and each leg between them is short enough to enjoy.
The coastal hour
The stretch between Hue and Da Nang, where the line climbs the Hai Van Pass, is the reason people ride this train. The track clings to the hillside with the South China Sea opening up below. Sit on the seaward side and keep your camera within reach.
Food on board
A trolley works the carriages with rice boxes, instant noodles, and coffee, but the real eating happens at station stops, where vendors pass food through the windows. Have small notes ready.
